Lord, Have Mercy
The first of our weekly Monday musical reflections from the “Vigil Project” connects us with the theme of Ash Wednesday, where we intentionally take time, at the beginning of Lent, to recognise our unworthiness before the Lord and where we identify those areas which we need to give to God and ask him to make holy.
But the penitential theme of this song should not be taken as something negative – our sins are not an invitation to beat ourselves up. Instead, recognition of those areas where we struggle is an invitation to hope and an opportunity to reach out – cognisant of our fragility – for more of God’s grace and mercy!
Lyrics
From our shame, from our guilt O Lord
Cleanse us from our sin, make us holy
In your name, in your blood O Lord
Blot out our offence, make us worthy
Lord have mercy
We’e begging for mercy
Jesus, only you make us worthy
From our weakness, from our betrayal
Cleanse us from our sin, make us holy
In your kindness, in your compassion
Blot out our offence, make us worthy
Lord have mercy
We’re begging for mercy
Jesus, only you make us worthy
Remember me when you come into your kingdom
Lord,
At the beginning of this Lenten season, help us to look with honesty at those areas where we are most in need of your mercy. As we fast, pray and give this Lent, may we seek opportunities to attune ourselves more closely with you and rid ourselves of anything that separates us from you.
Amen
