My name is Sophie Sullivan and I’m Catechetical Co-ordinator for the Parish. This is a part-time role which started only in November 2020. It has been a thought years in the making, actually, and I am glad that the opportunity for me to be able to serve the community in this way has finally arisen. I bring with me to the role over 20 years of experience in diocesan youth ministry and parish ministry, as well as teaching in religious education and catechesis.
So, just a little bit about what I hope to do: My main role is to oversee what the parish offers, in terms of our catechetical and sacramental programmes. I will work alongside our wonderful priests, Frs Peter and Antonio, to be the umbrella, so to speak, regarding faith formation, so as to keep programmes running effectively, to facilitate training (where necessary), to recruit new volunteer catechists as the need arises and to develop and improve what we offer as time goes on.
I have a passion for sharing the riches of our Catholic faith with others. I am keen to develop online opportunities for us to grow in faith, especially in this moment where online church is becoming such an essential part of our lives. Part of my role will also include looking at how we can best serve the young people in the parish – so my hope is that I will be able to liaise more fully with the staff at St Joseph’s Primary and at St Mary’s Secondary, to develop the links between parish and school or share resources that can be of spiritual benefit to the students.
I am happily married to my wonderful husband, Mike, and we have five lovely children, who like to keep me busy. We have lived in Bishop’s Stortford since 2012, with a family “sabbatical” in recent years to Zimbabwe, where we spent some time, to enable our children could get to know their paternal grandparents. That was an eye-opening and heart-widening experience, from which we have gained immense blessings as a family.
