Caring for those in our Community
With the easing in lockdown measures, we are seeing the beginnings of more and more activity on our streets. Haircuts, shops open and nights out are now all possible….
One initiative in Bishop’s Stortford that has been dormant over lockdown, but is beginning to get up and running again is the wonderful work of the Street Pastors.
These are local volunteers from different churches in Stortford who make the commitment during nights at the weekend, once a month, to go out onto the streets to show care to those in our community in a very practical way. This support can range from helping an individual to find their way home, sitting with someone who has had one too many or providing a shoulder to cry on for someone needing a listening ear.
Working in partnership with the council and local law enforcement, the invaluable work of the Street Pastors enables the police to be free to respond to emergencies.
How can I help?
Maybe, post-lockdown, you are keen to find a new way of giving back to the local community. Certainly, helping our brothers and sisters beyond our church walls is something we are all called to do. Being a Street Pastor involves giving practical support to those in need. Whilst Christian values underpin why they do what they do, a street pastor will not be expected to preach or force their faith on others, but to simply show care and compassion to make a small difference in someone’s life.
